Sensory Dissection

Flavor

Mengku Shu

EarthySmoothSweetWoody

Mengku shu is ripe pu-erh from the Mengku area of Lincang, Yunnan, a region better known for bold sheng. Ripe teas from here are thick, smooth, and sweet: dark dates, molasses, and damp forest floor with a clean finish and very little bitterness. The body is full and the mouthfeel silky, making it a comfortable daily shu that also stands up to long gongfu sessions with many short infusions.

Shu Pu-erh

EarthySmoothWoodySweet

Shu (ripe) pu-erh shortcuts aging through a controlled pile-fermentation developed in the 1970s. The result is dark, thick, and smooth: forest floor, dates, and dark wood with a natural molasses sweetness and very little bitterness. It brews many infusions and is gentle on the stomach, which makes it a daily tea across southern China and Hong Kong.
