Sensory Dissection
Flavor
Lao Ban Zhang
Lao Ban Zhang is the most famous — and most counterfeited — village in pu-erh, on Bulang mountain. Its sheng is powerful: an intense bitterness that resolves into deep, lingering returning sweetness, thick body, and a pungent orchid-and-honey aroma. The tea is demanding when young and built for decades of aging. Expect high prices and buy only from trusted sources, as genuine Ban Zhang leaf is extremely limited.
Yiwu Sheng
Yiwu sheng comes from the ancient tea forests around Yiwu in Xishuangbanna, one of pu-erh's most celebrated regions. The style is famously soft: floral, honeyed, and sweet with a gentle bitterness that fades fast into a long cooling finish. Young Yiwu is among the most approachable sheng for newcomers, while aged Yiwu develops camphor, old wood, and dried-fruit depth. It remains the benchmark for elegant sheng pu-erh.
